Preparing to Sell Your House

Are you thinking about selling your house and downsizing? It’s overwhelming, isn’t it? There are so many moving parts to the process and facts to consider, it’s hard to know where to begin.

Recently Dana spoke at a realtor event to educate the community about downsizing.  If you’re feeling stuck, some of what she shared may be helpful. She emphasized that step one is to start educating yourself about the process of clearing and selling your house. There are 4 key professionals that you should consider consulting for guidance. And the sooner the better!

Realtor:

A trusted realtor will inform you about the market in your area, the potential for your house based on its condition and the best time of year to hit the market. Good realtors have a wealth of area-specific information and are interested in cultivating long term relationships. It’s perfectly fine to start shopping for a realtor well in advance of when you plan to sell.

Title Company:

A Title company can be an invaluable resource for information about property taxes, closing costs, and how the process works in your county. Often they are happy to meet with you early in the process – well before any transactions occur to help with your purchase/sale planning.

Lender:

New mortgage products emerge every year. There are a lot of ways to finance a purchase and a move and ways to leverage the equity in your current home to do it. Take the time to find a lender you trust, it’s never too early to find out what you can afford, what lending option will fit your situation best, and what you can do to enhance your position when it is time to take out a loan.

Professional Organizer / Move Manager:

The downsizing process can start anytime. Hiring a Professional Organizer and/or Move Manager reduces your overwhelm and stress, and gives you the non-judgmental support that everyone should have during a move. An organizer helps you figure out where to start and how to begin the process of curating what you own. They can provide advice as well as hands on help to get the work done.

One of the keys to success is working with ethical professionals that have a solid reputation in your neighborhood. Word of mouth is the best way to find these trusted resources. Ask your neighbors, friends and business associates.
